Russia Retrospective

Categories:

Two winters ago, Red Bull's Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen headed over to Sochi, Russia to film for an Oakley project, Uniquely. Here's a more in depth look at what they found:

Angeli Wins Park City World Cup Superpipe!

AngWClogo.jpgWho goes from broken collarbone to standing atop a World Cup podium in a couple months? Red Bull's Angeli Van Laanen, that's who. Going into X Games last week, Angeli was a bit spooked and rightfully so. Her last two season's she's been held back by unlucky injuries and staring down the gut of a 22-foot pipe would make any able-bodied skier nervous.

Angeli got some monkeys off her back at X and came out the gates charging at World Cup on Saturday. Her winning run was a 540 with a mute grab, into an unnatural 540, into another 540, a big stylie grabbed straight air, and she rounded it out with a 720 at the bottom. "I"m going to bring out my 900 next time and start doing all my tricks," she said afterwards. Look out for big things from Angeli.
PVAlogo.jpgIt's hard to think of X Games and Aspen without thinking of the Powder Video Awards. One night a year, the industry converges on The Jerome Hotel in Aspen to share some drinks, good times, and recognize all the hard work and innovation that went into making the always impressive crop of movies for the season.

Red Bull Skiers walked away from the show last night with a slew of hardware. The night started off with Tanner Hall nabbing second place, a position he's held for a number of years, in the Reader's Poll. On the women's side, Grete Eliassen held it down with a thrid place trophy. Little guy Sean Pettit was presented the Breakthrough Performer Award by super big guy Lonnie Paxton of the New England Patriots. Finally, Simon Dumont cleanly stomped the Best Manmade Air award for his mind-blowing world record quarterpipe hit from last spring.

LogoPreview.jpgSo what's the big deal about the AST Dew Tour, who's first of three events begins Dec. 18th? Oh man, where to start?

First of all, the AST Dew Tour's summer program has been running for a while and is basically the be-all, end-all competition tour for certain sports like skateboarding. AST is bringing all that production knowledge and know-how over to the winter side of things for the first time this winter lending confidence this tour will flourish and not fizzle after one season like some others in the past.

Secondly, the prize money is pretty darn phat. With about $500,000 total going to skiers overs the three tour stops (Breckenridge, Mt. Snow, and Northstar-At-Tahoe). This kind of skrillia is drawing big names, which leads to my third point.

Angeli Stoked To Be Back On Snow!

"I woke up early today expecting warmer weather than usual here in Summit County, as predicted by The Weather Channel. Sunny and Clear... Although the sun did poke out once in a while, at Keystone it was anything but warm! It was lightly snowing with windchill. Only the die hards were out!

Due to wind, the gondola wasn't running, leaving us to take the chair all the way to the peak. Most of us hiked all day just to keep warm. But the days shredding was well worth the 20 min. freezing lift ride and blowing winds. Keystone opened a legit park today! The first of it's kind this season. With a jump, around 10 features, rails and even a wall ride. There was quit the crew out today dialing in their tricks. I happen to be the only female in the park, which pushed me even more to step it up. My rail skills are back, now for the pipe! Copper is due to open their Superpipe within the week, with Breck following close behind. My first halfpipe competition of the winter is Dec. 18-21st and at my home resort! Breckenridge is hosting the first stop of Winter Dew Tour. Should be bangin'!"

The Red Bull Girls Say "Cheese!"

Categories:

angeli-grete630x390.jpgLast week, Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen stopped by the Red Bull Headquarters in Santa Monica for the first time since they both donned their Red Bull Helmets back in January at X Games. Taking in Red Bull HQ in an experience in and of itself, but unfortunately it was short lived for the two...there's work to be done! They jumped in the car and took a road trip up to Big Bear. The girls had to wake the next morning a 4:30 a.m. for makeup so they could hit the sunrise and a grueling all day photo shoot. Even though there was no snow, Grete and Angeli got to enjoy the scenery, be goofy and snap some shots for the upcoming winter season.

Check out some behind the scene snaps, and check back in a few weeks when the real photos from the shoot come back!

Catching up with Angeli VanLaanen

DSC_5647.jpgHi Angeli, tell us how this summer went for you?

I really got a summer this year. It wasn't by choice at first, but somewhere along the way I stopped being bummed about not traveling to NZ, and I had a blast! I spent a lot of time at the Washington coast surfing. A definite highlight of the summer was taking a backpacking surf trip to a remote beach for a few days. We were the only humans on the beach and the curious, somewhat confused wildlife had no fear and would hangout around us daily. A hurricane practically washed out the camp. But we built a fort with our boards, tarp, jackets and the trees. It was survival in the wilderness... an epic adventure!

Red Bull Ladies in New Oakley Movie

Categories:

120308FS04.jpgLast winter, Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen traveled to some of the furthest reaches of the sport, namely Russia, to film for Oakley's recently released all-girl shred flick, "Uniquely."

"The girls in the movie are some of my best friends and I hope it portrays really how much fun we have all the time," Grete said.

"I can't wait to share this film with everyone," added Angeli. "The footage from Russia is better then any story I could tell you about the trip."

"Uniquely" will be distributed by Foam magazine in the United States, Cooler magazine in Europe, Yen magazine in Australia and Transworld Snowboarding magazine in Japan.

The film is also available as a free download at www.oakleywomen.com/uniquelymovie and at participating Oakley retailers.
