It’s early in the morning and Tanner is still asleep back at Marc Frank Montoya’s The Block Hotel. He doesn’t need to be here yet, the crew of 12 still has a couple hours of setting up probably half a million dollars worth of rented lighting, dolly, sound, and camera equipment. Grips, gaffers, and boom operators—all dudes who regularly work in Hollywood—are slinging jargon faster then us bro-brahs can comprehend. When’s the last time you saw an effort like this to film a few seconds of opening scene for a ski movie. Never is the right answer.

Spending more money in one day—not even on shooting skiing—than most film companies spend in an entire season maybe gives you some kind of idea the scale that Tanner’s movie, “The Massive”, is on. The day wasn’t easy. The closed down diner had no A/C and the doors had to be shut to keep out traffic noise. Tanner goes through countless take and camera angles, and handles it like the handles the heat of the X Games Superpipe—like a champ.

Check out the rest of the shots from the day!

Speaking of hot, heard about Red Bull’s The Experiment? Going down Friday on the Santa Monica Pier. Check it!

CP flew an A-Star fitted with a Tyler mount down from Seattle. Based on thoughts from credible sources, this was the first time Mt. Hood had ever seen a helicopter used for ski or snowboard shoot.

It's difficult to fathom what needs to go on for a heli shoot to be a success. The chaos is nearly indescribable. We sat on the in-run up by the skiers while the Red Bull Skiing team manager Pete did his best to relay commands from CP over the roar of the rotors sitting in the shotgun seat. Those little Motorola radios provided little more fidelity than indecipherable bursts of muddled shouting. Nevertheless as the heli dropped low over the top of the in run, and our gloves skipped away across the glacier like bunnies across a field, order somehow manifested itself from madness and the shoot was a resounding success.

See all 25 shots from the massive gallery of the final action shoot for Tanner Hall's film, "The Massive!"
Tanner and crew had taken a few days to shred the public park, spread the stoke, and chill out at the spacious Red Bull Skiing house in Welches.

A few days later it was go time. The crew of Tanner Hall, Callum Pettit, Dana Flahr, Sean Fields, C.R. Johnson, Chris Turpin, and Frank Raymond cruised up the silent slopes of after-hour Timberline in a transport cat to survey the madness that Frank Wells and Jerimiah Pebley of Snow Park Technologies were pushing up out of massive amounts of snow. What they found was a hip with 90-foot long landings on two sides, seperated by a 17-foot wide deck.

Tanner got up on the hip next to Frank and began shaping it to his
liking right away. Soon he was bombing in the steep in-run and boosting
some large test airs. All the other skiers hit it a few times as well
and the general consensus was it was dope, but needed just a bit more
vert in the takeoff. Frank and Jerimiah got to work and the crew
cruised down set for a full on session the next day. Unfortunately, the
weather on Tuesday wasn't playing along, and the shoot was called off
after some chilly, windy hits in the increasingly overcast light.

No
worries though, the stage was set and the forecast was calling for blue
for Big Wednesday and the helicopter coming down from Seattle.

Check out the second Massive Mt. Hood gallery!

Tanner Hall is taking full advantage of the 900+ inches of snow that fell on Mt. Hood this year, by having X-Games pipe builder Frank Wells push up a massive pile of snow for a season ending super feature at Timberline.

Just a couple days before the final shoot for "The Massive", Tanner is enjoying the quiet before the storm. The last few days have been mellow: skiing at T-Line's public park, a quick tramp and skate session at Windell's, and some tasty BBQ served up by local legend Justin Wiegand. Red Bull Skiing has a huge house down in the woods of Welches, and all the boys are up for this session. Sean Fields can't stop talking about all the fish he's going to pull out of the river behind the house. Callum Pettit made the push from Whistler with super photog Blake Jorgenson. Just hours before Dana Flahr, Frank Raymond, and Chris Turpin rolled in from the same leg despite the best efforts to thwart the mission from their GPS. The Provo brothers, Ian and Neil, arrived late last night and are armed with topo maps and fly rods at their camp down by the river. Sammy Carlson's house is just across the street, and ski-filmmaker Eric Iberg is omnipresent and fueling the stoke.

Davenport, who famously skied all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000 foot peaks last year, completed his European quest in just 10 days from May 5 to May 14.

“These are some of the most famous mountains in the world. It’s where modern mountaineering was born over 200 years ago,” stated Davenport. “It was an honor, a challenge and a thrill to ski from the summit of these peaks and I think this project will help progress high performance skiing in the biggest mountains.”

“Chris is really pushing new boundaries in the sport by combining technical climbing with aggressive skiing on steep faces, something that we like to call freeski mountaineering,” states Kästle Ltd. president, Siegfried Rumpfhuber. “We believe that this is a growing category in the ski world and Chris continues to be a major influence on Kästle’s ski technology.”

Davenport is a downhill skier by training and unlike traditional ski mountaineers, he eschews super lightweight ski gear in favor of high performance skis and boots that allow him to ski the most demanding lines with speed and finesse.

“There’s no way I could have skied these routes without specific gear and a terrific support team,” explains Davenport. “I rely on Kästle MX88 skis, which have enough power and stability to handle the steepest terrain and Garmont Radium boots, which are light enough to climb in without sacrificing control or speed.”

Davenport was joined on his climbs and ski descents by fellow pro skier Stian Hagen, photographers Christian Pondella, while pro photographer Peter Mathis and a film crew from Matchstick Productions documented the descents from a variety of dramatic angles for their upcoming film, CLAIM.

Four Classics in the Alps

Eiger 13,025 feet:
Located in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, first summitted in 1858 by Christian Almer, Charles Barrington and Peter Bohren. Davenport skied the west face from the summit on May 6, 2008.

Monte Rosa 15,203 feet:
Extended mountain massif in the Valais Alps, between the Swiss and Italian border. The Dufourspitze is the highest peak of the Monte Rosa massif and is also the highest peak in Switzerland. Davenport skied the Marinelli Couloir, the longest couloir of the Alps at 7000 vertical feet, on May 14, 2008.

Mont Blanc 15,781 feet:
The highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, it forms the border between France and Italy. First ascent in 1786 by Horace Bénédict de Saussure, Jacques Balmat and Micheal Paccard. Davenport skied the north face to the northeast face of the Dome du Gouter on May 10, 2008.

Matterhorn 14,692 feet:
Towering over the Swiss village of Zermatt, the Matterhorn is perhaps the most recognizable peak in the World, straddling the border between Italy and Switzerland. First ascent in 1865 by a party including Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Robert Hadow, Michel Croz, Peter Taugwalders Sr. and Peter Taugwalders Jr. Davenport skied the east face, from 500 feet below the summit on May 4, 2008.

*Photo by Christian Pondella, story courtesy of Kästle/Backbone Media, LLC.

Need something to help you reach higher? Also along for the trip, to collaborate with and document what Tanner’s crew was doing, was Eric Crosland, Dave Mossop, and Malcolm Sangster of Rocky Mountain Sherpas. In an effort to create a new and innovated avalanche education film in 16mm, the RMS have traveled far and wide this winter capturing epic images of skiing and its relationship to avalanches. Malcolm took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to talk to Red Bull Skiing about their movie, "The Fine Line".

Tell us about the project you guys are doing and how it came about?

In high school we lost four close friends to an avalanche, and over the years we’ve lost more and seen many young people perish. We’ve always wanted to try and do our part and make an avalanche education film that kids will actually be stoked on. The Canadian Avalanche Foundation, having similar goals of youth education, realized that an energetic film is a great way to engage students and inform them about avalanche safety. Their belief in us really opened doors and companies like North Face, Red Bull, Black Diamond, and others have followed suit and have made this thing possible.

You guys have been out in the field a whole bunch this year. Any great stories of pow days or amazing things you've seen?

Well, we’ve definitely filmed a bunch of sick pow riding and gnar in BC and Alaska this year, but one of the more exciting things to watch was the avalanche control work done by various operations. Western Canada had a pretty sketchy snowpack this year and with teams like that of the Lake Louise resort in Alberta, we got to chuck a few shots around and fire a couple guns to try and film some avalanches. One crisp January morning, in pinging pink light, we blasted a size 3 avalanche to ground and captured it on 16mm. The power of such a slide is truly savage to behold.

How and why did you end up working alongside Tanner Hall's "The Massive" project?

Working earlier this winter with Red Bull and their Canadian athletes Sean Pettit, Mikey Rencz and Will Gadd led us to cross paths with CP and Tanner’s project, “The Massive”. After a few phone calls and plan to collaborate in Alaska, we all met up in Haines to throw down. Together we captured some unreal riding by Tanner and Dana Flahr, but we also got a chance to delve into the behind the scenes avalanche safety protocols that go into filmmaking in such big terrain. We’re in business to film gnarly lines and we’re showing that there is a lot more that goes into it than what you see in the ski movies.

When does the movie come out? Any future plans?

The primary film piece is set to premier in October 2008, look for the full DVD package with the four training films to release after that. Future plans? Well, definitely a severe whack of editing and animating interspersed periodically by some climbing and patio drinking. After that comes the film tour in the fall. Our goal is to spread avalanche awareness as well as general interest in going to the backcountry to as many people as possible. So once the production is wrapped up we need to make sure this thing circulates, educates and gets as many people psyched as possible.

Check out "The Fine Line" Teaser!

Click in here for more Red Bull projects!
