Kaya and Grete Grab WX14's First Medals!

Categories:

wmnslopelogo.jpgWomen's Slopestyle went down today under beautiful partly sunny skies at Butttermilk as Winter X Games 14 kicked off. Red Bull veteran Grete Eliassen, who is also a veteran of last year's slope podium, brought down three solid runs all of which included as nasty 900 on the big bottom jump and slide easily into the bronze medal spot just behind Keri Herman.

Way out in front of the field with three 90-plus point runs was Red Bull Ski Team newcomer Kaya Turski. Kaya brought the heat on her last run with a 270 disaster, 450-off the canon, switch 900, 540 and switch 720 off the big bottom booter to give her a score of 96.66 and an 11-point lead on the competition.

All in all, not a bad afternoon as the Red Bull Ski Team nabs two of the first three medals award at WX14.

Two winters ago, Red Bull's Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen headed over to Sochi, Russia to film for an Oakley project, Uniquely. Here's a more in depth look at what they found:

Grete Eliassen Announces Two-Year Film Project

Categories:

"I've always wanted to get all my friends together and film in all the best spots around the world," Red Bull skier Grete Eliassen says about her new project. Say My Name is a two-year venture Grete embarked on last season with longtime ski/snowboard photographer Stan Evans. The two and crew spent most of last winter in the Utah backcountry honing Grete's skills on her sled and on the steps. All the time has already paid off huge, check out Grete's huge huck photos and story in the current November issue of Powder Magazine

With a good season of filming already in the bag, Grete hopes to branch out this season and bring other athletes into the project like Sarah Burke, Marie-France Roy, and Seth Morrison. Keep an eye out here for updates on her progress, and check out the teaser below:

PowPoll10.jpgWith the season's newest ski flicks fresh on the brain, the time is ripe for dropping your vote for the 2010 Powder Reader's Poll. Last season, the people spoke and brought four Red Bull athletes into the top ranks. Tanner Hall nabbed the number two spot, just behind ski icon/demigod Seth Morrisson. Shane McConkey slightly beat out the Red Bull teammate, and Powder Poll top ten newcomer, Simon Dumont for the 8th place spot. And lastly, but not leastly, Grete Eliassen was sitting pretty (pun intended) in the number three spot in the lady's ranks.

Results always get released during the Powder Magazine Video Awards, and this season will be no different as the PVAs again make their mark in late January in Aspen. And, just so you know, your vote for the 2010 Powder Reader's Poll not only gains you the satisfaction of being a proactive member of our ski community, but it also gets you an entry into the contest that will bring you to Aspen for four days for the show. PVAs happen to be the same time as Winter X Games, so it's like winning three trips in one (Assspen, PVAs, and X Games, get it?)! AND, as a bonus for linking to the voting through RedBullSkiing.Com, Powder Associate Editor Johnny Stifter has agreed to be the personal ski valet to the winners of the contest for their entire trip, should they come through RedBullSkiing.com! What a guy!

DSC_6496.jpgI might be aging myself here, but I don't really get Twitter. I mean, as a techy kind of dude, I get it, but I don't really see why it's blowing up. I just can't imagine anyone, save my mother, would care to know what I'm doing at all hours of the day. I have enough trouble thinking of something novel to put in my Facebook status.

Simon_PondellaLogo.jpgWhat better way to look back on Winter X Games 13 than with a world class photo gallery. Red Bull doesn't joke around when it comes to photography, which is why they had last year's Powder Magazine "Photo of the Year" winner, Christian Pondella, firing off shots for them at this years Winter X.

Check out the gallery and enjoy!
PVAlogo.jpgIt's hard to think of X Games and Aspen without thinking of the Powder Video Awards. One night a year, the industry converges on The Jerome Hotel in Aspen to share some drinks, good times, and recognize all the hard work and innovation that went into making the always impressive crop of movies for the season.

Red Bull Skiers walked away from the show last night with a slew of hardware. The night started off with Tanner Hall nabbing second place, a position he's held for a number of years, in the Reader's Poll. On the women's side, Grete Eliassen held it down with a thrid place trophy. Little guy Sean Pettit was presented the Breakthrough Performer Award by super big guy Lonnie Paxton of the New England Patriots. Finally, Simon Dumont cleanly stomped the Best Manmade Air award for his mind-blowing world record quarterpipe hit from last spring.

Grete Eliassen Takes Silver in Slope at X13!

Greteslopelogo.jpgToday under the veil of big fat snowflakes, Red Bull's Grete Eliassen held down her run to take second place in the inaugural Women's SlopeStyle at Winter X. Grete is no stranger to owning an X Games games medal, but this marks her first in the new SlopeStyle event. Grete came in with a final score of 79.00, taking second to Anna Segal and besting a field that included the likes of Kaya Turski, Kristi Leskinen, and last nights Women's SuperPipe gold medalist Sarah Burke.

Big congrats Grete! Stay tuned for further coverage...
pipefinalsvermont.jpgFirst off, let's have a big round of applause for Red Bull's Grete Eliassen on securing a 2nd place finish at the Women's SuperPipe at Mt. Snow. Grete was just edged out by Jen Hudak for the top of the podium and scored well beyond Sarah Burke, who came in third. Not bad for someone who spent all pre-season getting an education. Grete's got some good coverage of her own of Dew Tour at Mt. Snow and her New Year's Trip to Retallack on her blog. Check it out.

In other news, get ready to surf come couch in a couple hours as we got the Men's Superpipe Finals live on NBC at 4:30 p.m. Eastern (that's 3:30 Central, 2:30 Mountain, and 1:30 Pacific). Why should you watch? Well for one it's a rare oppurtunity to see Red Bull's Simon Dumont and Tanner Hall, the best pipe skiers in the world, duke it out in a sure to be no-holds-barred event. Word is Justin Dorey, who got second to Tanner at the Breckenridge stop, was busting double in practice. Will Tanner break out his double? Tune in and find out.

Day One of the Season: Check! Powder: Check!

openingday.jpgRed Bull Team Rider Grete Eliassen checked in, and sent us a pic, to report on her first official day of the season. Of course, Grete was lucky enough to slay South America back in August, but that doesn't really count. It's gotta be North America and it's gotta be fall. Any skiing pre-thanksgiving is good, but Grete took it real deep to Nov. 7th at Snowbird and about three feet of pow. Nice work, G.

"All I have to say is, this week has been the "Best Week Ever!" Utah got dumped on, Senator Obama became our President, Utah beat TCU which makes them undefeated after 10 games and Snowbird opened today. You can't really ask for anything more then that. Anyways, since it was opening day I headed up to Snowbird. With a 46'' base and the tram being open, it was more than the best first day ever for me. Growing up in Minnesota and Norway you don't really get to ski pow pow on your first day of the season."
