C.R. Johnson: 1983-2010

Categories:

DSC_7199.jpgIt's difficult to put into words what the world lost yesterday in the passing of C.R. Johnson, who at the age of 26 succumbed to injuries sustained in a fall at his home resort of Squaw Valley, CA. Beyond being a good friend to Redbullskiing.com and an amazing athlete, C.R. embodied what it meant to be a genuine person. I've never had the pleasure of knowing someone who was as friendly, approachable, humble, and positive as C.R. was. He was that rare kind of person who comes through your life and leaves you a better human being because of it.

Our thoughts go out to C.R.'s family, friends, and the ski community as whole. We miss you terribly, C.R. Thank you for the time you granted us and the things you taught us we will never forget.

Red Bull Skiing Welcomes Kaya Turski to the Team!

Categories:

kayalogo.jpgRed Bull Skiing is excited and proud to welcome Kaya Turski to our ski team. With the paint on her helmet only one week fresh, Kaya is already killing the competition (see above).

The 21-year-old Canadian has only been on skis an astonishing 5-years, two of which were plagued with injury, but Kaya's penchant for rails and big air began earlier on the unforgiving battle-field of inline-skating. She stumbled upon skiing almost on accident, and boy are we glad she did.

Coincidentally, Kaya has a nice profile in the February issue of Powder Magazine on news stands now. Pick one up and check out page 96. In the article, Mike Douglas is quoted as saying, "Any comp she doesn't fall in, she'll win." Well said, Godfather.

I don't even know what to say about this. You'll just have to watch it for yourselves.

PowderDec.jpg...and by "graces" we mean obliterates a big puffy pow pillow. The December issue of Powder should be hitting stands real soon, so keep an eye out for the Red Bull helmet and pick it up.

In other Windstedt news, Henrik recently signed with freeski powerhouse Salomon Skis, joining Red Bull teammate Simon Dumont on the sticks from France. Congrats to both Henrik and Salomon.

Grete Eliassen Announces Two-Year Film Project

Categories:

"I've always wanted to get all my friends together and film in all the best spots around the world," Red Bull skier Grete Eliassen says about her new project. Say My Name is a two-year venture Grete embarked on last season with longtime ski/snowboard photographer Stan Evans. The two and crew spent most of last winter in the Utah backcountry honing Grete's skills on her sled and on the steps. All the time has already paid off huge, check out Grete's huge huck photos and story in the current November issue of Powder Magazine

With a good season of filming already in the bag, Grete hopes to branch out this season and bring other athletes into the project like Sarah Burke, Marie-France Roy, and Seth Morrison. Keep an eye out here for updates on her progress, and check out the teaser below:

PowPoll10.jpgWith the season's newest ski flicks fresh on the brain, the time is ripe for dropping your vote for the 2010 Powder Reader's Poll. Last season, the people spoke and brought four Red Bull athletes into the top ranks. Tanner Hall nabbed the number two spot, just behind ski icon/demigod Seth Morrisson. Shane McConkey slightly beat out the Red Bull teammate, and Powder Poll top ten newcomer, Simon Dumont for the 8th place spot. And lastly, but not leastly, Grete Eliassen was sitting pretty (pun intended) in the number three spot in the lady's ranks.

Results always get released during the Powder Magazine Video Awards, and this season will be no different as the PVAs again make their mark in late January in Aspen. And, just so you know, your vote for the 2010 Powder Reader's Poll not only gains you the satisfaction of being a proactive member of our ski community, but it also gets you an entry into the contest that will bring you to Aspen for four days for the show. PVAs happen to be the same time as Winter X Games, so it's like winning three trips in one (Assspen, PVAs, and X Games, get it?)! AND, as a bonus for linking to the voting through RedBullSkiing.Com, Powder Associate Editor Johnny Stifter has agreed to be the personal ski valet to the winners of the contest for their entire trip, should they come through RedBullSkiing.com! What a guy!
