Comp Season Well Under Way...

Kalback_C_MG_8544.jpgA couple weeks ago, our good friend and photog, Chip Kalback, was front row for all the action that went down at the first of three Dew Tour stops. Despite being the coldest place on the face of the earth, the Red Bull skiers kept it hot in Breckenfridge.

russJOI.jpgRed Bull's Russ Henshaw just secured a glorious victory over Red Bull's Oscar Scherlin and Jon Olsson at this year's Jon Olsson Invitational, which is part of the larger Jon Olsson Super Sessons that has been going on in Are, Sweden the last 10 days or so.

From Newschoolers.com Jeff Schmuck (special thanks to Jeff and photographer Dan Brown):

It really could have gone either way, but in the end the judges gave the nod to an indescribably ecstatic Russ, who called tonight the best night of his life while relishing in his huge victory as Jon and Oscar drowned him in champagne.

henshawlogo.jpgYesterday, with over 10,000 spectators cheering and clamoring to see all the action in Bad Gastein, Austria, Red Bull's Russ Henshaw skied away with this years title at Red Bull Play Streets. Russ won a sweet Suzuki SUV, which is going to have a long boat ride back to Australia, and the respect of his fellow riders. Red Bull Skiing strategically acquisitioned our correspondent David Lesh, who was also a competitior this year, to get you all the inside action from Play Streets. Here's Lesh's report (see his previous report here). Make sure to check out his photo gallery as well.

Practice had ended and although we only got 3 runs, everyone was feeling better about the setup. The next morning the athletes awoke and a few of us stumbled our way up the course to check things out and see what changes had been made.

They had taken a little off the lip and knuckle of the table (to help with the speed issue), but the snow had really set up, making any drastic changes to the jump impossible. Because of the speed into the table and given how unique all of the features were, everyone had to be smart about what tricks they threw and on what part of the course. I think we all liked this extra challenge and it really forced us to strategize (more than usual) about our runs.

Dew Tour Breckenridge Update

P1000404logo.jpgIn Colorado, when it snow, it storms. Standing atop the second jump in the slopestyle course this afternoon, in a couple seconds the wind swepts sheets of snow across Peak 8 at Breckenridge and the start, clearly visible just prior, was cloaked in pure Rocky Mountain nukage.

All the athletes and staff crowded into a tiny tent atop the course, and despite being covered on three sides the coverage did little to keep the snow from getting in and coating everyone. Needless to say, competition (only in the 1st run of prelims) was suspended. Hopefully the weather will calm down enough tomorrow to resume. Check back in for continued coverage.
LogoPreview.jpgSo what's the big deal about the AST Dew Tour, who's first of three events begins Dec. 18th? Oh man, where to start?

First of all, the AST Dew Tour's summer program has been running for a while and is basically the be-all, end-all competition tour for certain sports like skateboarding. AST is bringing all that production knowledge and know-how over to the winter side of things for the first time this winter lending confidence this tour will flourish and not fizzle after one season like some others in the past.

Secondly, the prize money is pretty darn phat. With about $500,000 total going to skiers overs the three tour stops (Breckenridge, Mt. Snow, and Northstar-At-Tahoe). This kind of skrillia is drawing big names, which leads to my third point.

Jon Olsson Second in Stockholm!

Double flips are dominating the city-jump season, so it's no big surprise to see innovator Jon Olsson up on the podium at the Stockholm King of Style event. Jon took second place and proceeded to reenact the gasoline fight scene from Zoolander with Red Bull teammate Simon Dumont. Check out the Jon Olsson Videoblog!
