Comp Season Well Under Way...

Kalback_C_MG_8544.jpgA couple weeks ago, our good friend and photog, Chip Kalback, was front row for all the action that went down at the first of three Dew Tour stops. Despite being the coldest place on the face of the earth, the Red Bull skiers kept it hot in Breckenfridge.

Great video of Jon in Barcelona and all the action that went down surrounding the Big Air contest that Red Bull's Russ Henshaw took home. Thanks to Jon!

Russ Henshaw Dominating European Pre-Season Comps

Henshaw.jpgWith the Barcelona Snow Show this Saturday and the London Freeze Big Air last Sunday, two outstanding in-city contests took place in just one week - and were both dominated by Red Bull's Russ Henshaw! In front of 30,000 enthusiastic spectators, the Australian claimed his second victory in Barcelona's Olympic Stadium with a pair of Double Cork 1080s, executed perfectly both forward and switch.

RBWinLogo.jpgThe Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP), recently released the final world rankings for Men's and Women's Halfpipe, Slopestyle, Big Air and Overall winners for last season. The top three's are littered with Red Bull riders, check it out:

russJOI.jpgRed Bull's Russ Henshaw just secured a glorious victory over Red Bull's Oscar Scherlin and Jon Olsson at this year's Jon Olsson Invitational, which is part of the larger Jon Olsson Super Sessons that has been going on in Are, Sweden the last 10 days or so.

From Newschoolers.com Jeff Schmuck (special thanks to Jeff and photographer Dan Brown):

It really could have gone either way, but in the end the judges gave the nod to an indescribably ecstatic Russ, who called tonight the best night of his life while relishing in his huge victory as Jon and Oscar drowned him in champagne.

Dew Tour Tahoe Kicks Off!

DSC_2556_2.jpgThis is it folks. The final stop on the three leg Winter Dew Tour. The ski world descended on Northstar-At-Tahoe just as the sun broke on an epic storm that dumped something like 10 feet of powder in Tahoe. While it would've been sweet to shred pow in between events, I think everyone is breathing a sigh of relief that at least one tour stop this season will have decent weather.

Then sun busted out hot on Thursday and Tanner Hall and Simon Dumont relished in not having to run prelims as they were both pre-qualified for SuperPipe prelims: a hold over from the Vermont event. Tanner sat back and cheered on his fellow pro skiers from the bottom of the pipe, while Simon hunkered down in his hotel room to do his best at battling a nasty cold.

Despite feeling sick, Simon came out strong on Friday and qualified 2nd in the first round of Slopestyle prelims, easily moving on to finals. Australian Red Buller Russ Henshaw also breezed into the Saturday finals. Tanner spent Friday morning and evening hiking the Superpipe, which everyone generally agreed was pretty small, like the madman he is when it comes to practice.

Keep checking in for updates on Slope and Pipe finals. In the meantime, check out the gallery from the first two days of the last Dew stop.

Video Galore!

We appreciate that Mondays suck for a good amount of skiers out there. Back to work or back to school, no matter where your dreadful duty lies, we got some sickness to kick off your week. First off, you can now download The Massive on iTunes for just $5.99. Pop that on your iPod Nano and watch covertly from your cubicle or desk in the back of Algebra-Trig. And, for those with more immediate needs, we got the hot video straight out of Bad Gastein, Austria from this year's Red Bull Play Streets event. Enjoy.

henshawlogo.jpgYesterday, with over 10,000 spectators cheering and clamoring to see all the action in Bad Gastein, Austria, Red Bull's Russ Henshaw skied away with this years title at Red Bull Play Streets. Russ won a sweet Suzuki SUV, which is going to have a long boat ride back to Australia, and the respect of his fellow riders. Red Bull Skiing strategically acquisitioned our correspondent David Lesh, who was also a competitior this year, to get you all the inside action from Play Streets. Here's Lesh's report (see his previous report here). Make sure to check out his photo gallery as well.

Practice had ended and although we only got 3 runs, everyone was feeling better about the setup. The next morning the athletes awoke and a few of us stumbled our way up the course to check things out and see what changes had been made.

They had taken a little off the lip and knuckle of the table (to help with the speed issue), but the snow had really set up, making any drastic changes to the jump impossible. Because of the speed into the table and given how unique all of the features were, everyone had to be smart about what tricks they threw and on what part of the course. I think we all liked this extra challenge and it really forced us to strategize (more than usual) about our runs.
