People gawk at the Colorado Rockies in awe. But where most see the state's 54 14,000-foot peaks as a geological anomaly, Chris Davenport sees a skiing challenge. Between 1978 and 1991, legendary American backcountry pioneer Lou Dawson skied all 54. The 12-year quest helped land him in the Skiing Hall of Fame. In January of 2006, Davenport set out to conquer all 54 of the Centennial State's "14'ers." There is one major difference. Davenport accomplished the feat in just 12 months.

The 14'ers quest came on the heels of an already successful career in the arena of big mountain skiing. A former alpine downhill racer, Chris made his mark in the freeskiing community when he won the 1996 World Extreme Skiing Championships in Alaska. In 2000, he managed to land on the podium in each Freeskiing World Tour event he participated in, and concluded the season by winning his second World Championship at the 2001 Red Bull Snow Thrill of Alaska.

These days, Dav globe trots from mountain range to mountain range and conquers ski mountaineering's most formidable peaks. Using his accomplishments to promote interest and awareness in the sport, Chris is fueled by the desire to give back to skiing, because he says it has given him so much. Keep an eye out for Dav in the Southern Hemisphere this summer, and keep a keen watch on what challenges he'll come up with and conquer this winter.
